ASSIGNMENT:
Create 2 references in a new reference library. Think of a Journal Article and a Book Chapter reference (existing or fake)
OBJECTIVES:
Get the look-and-feel of EndNote
What's the difference between a (new) reference library and a reference
Understand the "garbage-in is garbage-out" principle of databases
Get familiar with the Autosave functionality of EndNote.
PROCEDURE:
Start EndNote Program via the Start Button
EndNote prompts you to select an existing reference library (database file), since this (probably) is the first time you use EndNote there is no. To create a new reference library close the dialog box (x or cancel) and choose Menu File > New
Name the file and save it on your I: drive
To manually create a new reference (record), choose Menu References > New. Now you're ready to fill a record referring to an existing or fake document
Select the desired reference type from the popup menu
Type data in the correct fields. Syntax of most fields is self-evident. Author Field syntax however is very sensitive. Last name (also called 'family name' or 'surname') is typed first and ends with a comma. Some examples:
one
author with a single last name:
Brown, J.M.M.
more
authors, multiple last names:
Brown, James M.M.
Stirling, C.M
Van den Eeckhout, Fons W M.
Mark:
"Van den Eeckhout". Finally in the reference
list of a manuscript, this name will be alphabetically sorted under letter
V. Note capitalization of the different parts of last names.
Mark: Everything behind the (first) comma is treated as first name(s),
spaces and/or dots separate multiple names and/or initials.
institution
as author:
Ministerie van Justitie,
institution
with a comma in its name (e.g. Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en
Wetenschappen):
Ministerie van Onderwijs,, Cultuur en Wetenschappen
Mark: Institutions should be treated as last names, so put a comma at the very end. Institutions with a comma in the name: insert two consecutive comma's.
