INTRODUCTION (parts of this text are copied
from Yale's
Endnote page)
To import citations from a bibliographic database you must first search
the database and save the resulting citations as a file (download). It is
extremely important to inform oneself of the correct steps that should be taken
making a download from a specific database: the download must first pass through
an appropriate Filter to format the citations. Filters exist as separate files
and have been developed for individual databases; many are included in the
EndNote software package, others may be downloaded from the EndNote web site,
and still others have been created locally and are available here. Existing
filters may be edited to accommodate citations from databases for which there is
not an appropriate filter. It is also possible to search some databases from
within EndNote, using special connection files, but the searching capabilities
provided are rudimentary; it is usually more useful to search in the database
itself and then import the resulting citations into EndNote. For several Maastricht University campus sources
(bibliographies (e.g. Medline Advanced from SilverPlatter), catalogues, contents, and indexes) we developed
filters for you.

SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS
Save the filters of your choice in your ..\EndNote\Filters directory,
with endnote installed the standard way the full path is: C:\Program
Files\EndNote\Filters
It is recommended while in Endnote to MARK your favorite filters in the so-called Filter manager (menu File / Import Filters / Open
Filter Manager). To select the filters provided by us in Endnote
click on the "Information Provider" column in the Filter Manager and scroll to
"university library Maastricht" in this column to find our filters grouped
together. Mark the filters of your choice by clicking the checkbox on the
left. Close the Filter Manager by the "Close Filter Manager" command
in the File menu. From now the marked filters will pop-up immediately if one selects the "import
option" in the import dialog box during an import action. Unmarked filters are more or less hidden behind the
"other filters" option. Filters in Endnote come with additional information on
how to make correct downloads etc.
To save the separate filter(s) from the table beneath to
your \endnote\filters directory just click on the filter(s) of your choice in the Endnote
filter column in the table below. Take care the filter is saved under the correct
file-name.
MAC USERS: How to convert Endnote Filters from
Windows to your Mac!:
Nico Rozendaal (neuropsychology dep.) kindly prepared a
convertion utility to convert filters, styles en connection files, originally developed
for windows, to mac. Moreover, he and his colleagues maintain a special site for the Mac. In case
you want more background
information about conversion from endnote-windows to endnote-mac, just go there.
To just convert (one of) the filters from the table below to mac functionality:
Download a specific (hqx encoded) convertion file first (provided by Nico Rozendaal)
Decode the file
Download the filters(s) from the table below to your desktop
Remove the .enf extension for your convenience (optional)
Drop the filter(s) from the desktop to the convertion file
Put the filter(s) in the Filters folder (within the EndNote folder on your hard disk)
