Steps involved in tranferring a version 9 endnote library down to version
7.
This back-transfer procedure IS NOT a back-conversion: specifically record
numbers of the original Endnote 9 library will NOT be the same in the final
Endnote 7 library unless you follow the instructions indicated below in steps 2
and 11
- IN ENDNOTE version 9:
- IF RECORD NUMBERING IN the 7 LIBRARY MUST BE IDENTICAL TO the 9 LIBRARY (otherwise
go to step 3):
- Download
(by rightclicking > save target as)
THIS
ENDNOTE STYLE (Refer Export-recnum(9).ens) to your Endnote 9 Style
directory
- If Endnote 9 is opened, close Endnote 9
- Open Endnote 9 again and open the library that you want to transfer to
Endnote 7
- Menu References > Sort References
- In the first bar choose Record Number (instead of default Author)
- Click OK
- Choose Edit Menu > Output Styles > Open Style Manager
- Tickle the "Refer Export-recnum(9)" Style
- Close Box (click the X)
- Choose Edit Menu > Output Styles > Choose the "Refer
Export-recnum(9)" Style
- Go to step 7
- Choose Edit Menu > Output Styles > Open Style Manager
- Tickle the "Refer Export" Style
- Close Box (click the X)
- Choose Edit Menu > Output Styles > Choose the "Refer
Export" Style
- Choose File Menu > Export (Choose a Name and a Folder Location)
- Select "Text File (*.txt)" in the "Save as Type" bar
- Click OK
- (Close ENDNOTE 9)
- IF RECORD NUMBERING IN the 7 LIBRARY MUST BE IDENTICAL TO the 9 LIBRARY (otherwise
go to step 12):
- Open the .txt file in a word processor (preferrably Notebook (=fast),
but Word may be used as well)
- The point now is to insert dummy records between records with
nonconsecutive numbers (i.e. one has to insert a dummy record between
records #20 and #22, if there is no #21 in between them, and three dummy
records between records #45 #49). It is NOT necessary to number the
dummy record(s) itself as long as in the end for every X : record number
X is the Xth record in the .txt file*). If you have to insert many dummy
records, it is recommended to copy a dummy record text block and paste
this on the right position in the text every time you need it. Here is a
textblock you may apply as such (Note the importance of %0 (zero) as
start tag and %O (capital o) as final tag and the fact that records must
be separated with at least one blank line):
%0 Start dummy record
%A 0001
%D 0001
%T 0001
%O END
- Save and close the .txt file (as text file, NOT as e.g. a Word
document!!)
- IN ENDNOTE 7:
- Create a new Reference Library
- Choose File Menu > Import
- In the dialog box press the Choose button and select the .txt file
exported from version 9
- In the Import Option bar choose the "Endnote Import" import
filter
- Click OK
*) If huge files (500+) must be back-transferred it is advised to make as
well a tab-delimited export first to e.g. an excel file: In excel one can easily
find 'missing' numbers in a consecutive list. With one eye on the excel sheet
and the other in the exported .txt file one is able to quickly find 'missing'
record numbers and insert dummies instead.
