OBJECTIVES:
Get experienced in making correct downloads (e.g.: save "Complete records") from your bibliographic sources
Make a proper use of EndNote importfilters
Understand very well that the "garbage-in is garbage-out" principle applies to this procedure in particular
ASSIGNMENT:
Make a selection of records in the bibliographic source of your choice (PubMed, Psycinfo, or Online Contents)
Save a (sub)set (download) of this selection on your I: drive (or sent this download to an e-mail address)
Import data into EndNote by using the correct importfilter
Start the bibliographic source of your choice:
From the University Library homepage choose:
"UL information resources" (section "Catalogues and Information Resources") and
select the source of your choice
Create a set of records
To Save the selection you made
Select the right download format:
In the pull-down menu next to the Display button: Choose "Medline"
Save the download to a destination. You may SAVE the download to a local drive, or the download may be sent by MAIL.
SAVE on a local drive:
In the "Send to" pull down menu: choose "File"
Choose "Save" and select the desired target drive and folder (before the Save option a pop-up blocker warning may appear, click then OK and repeat step 1)
Enter the desired filename and click OK
A textfile (.txt) will be saved now. This file may be imported in Endnote, continue this procedure there
Download sent by mail
In the "Send to" pull down menu: choose "E-mail"
The "Format" pull down should be set to "MEDLINE", the "as" pull down to "Text"
The "Sort" pull down is not critical
Enter the desired filename and click OK
From WebSPIRS database (Medline, PsycInfo, EMBASE, IFLP etc.)
Press the "Save" or "Send" button (in webspirs a floppy or mail icon respectively)
Take care: the right download format should be chosen!
From Library Catalogue (OPC) and Online Contents (OLC)
In EndNote choose File menu Import
Choose File: Select the download file that must be imported form your I:drive
Import Option: select "other filters", select the matching importfilter (Information Provider is university library Maastricht) to your download
Click the import button
Directly after import EndNote only shows the records that have just been imported, so if things went wrong you can delete the records easily without damaging your original database
